We had a very productive 2015 with the Capacity Building Program. We held five workshops and trained a total of 90 scientists. Our first training took place at the Jordan University of Science and Technology Center in Irbid, where we trained a group of scientists from Iraq on laboratory techniques on veterinary science. In addition, we organized two proposal-writing workshops and two manuscript-writing workshops in Nicaragua, Panama, and Colombia. We concluded 2015 with a follow-up training in Istanbul for the same group of Iraqi scientists; this time focusing on epidemiology. We had very positive reviews and were invited back to all four countries to continue building capacity mainly on writing techniques.

The participants came from different institutions in Panama (eg. the Gorgas and Smithsonian Tropical Research Institutes, University of Chiriquí, Technical Univ. and Panama University, among others). The aim of this workshop was to improve the quality of the grant proposals, assure project objectives were scientifically sound, and in accordance with the SENACYT funding priorities. The workshop was very successful and many participants came away with grant applications.

Panama Manuscript Writing Workshop

August 10-12, 2015

SSI held another workshop with SENACYT this summer, this one on manuscript writing. SSI trained 27 participants from different institutions in Panama. SSI assisted the participants in writing a scientific manuscript of good scientific quality to be published in a scientific journal. Most of the participants were writing in Spanish but wanted to learn to write in English, so SSI tailored the lectures and taught in English with Spanish translation.
