Arboviruses, (viruses that are transmitted via Mosquitos) are the cause of some of the most pervasive diseases affecting mankind today. The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the primary culprit for the transmission of these viruses in tropical climates like Nicaragua. In a partnership with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health spanning over a decade, The Sustainable Sciences Institute has studied the transmission, epidemiology and immune correlates of protection of these viruses in an effort to stem their spread and develop lasting systems of diagnoses and prevention.
Traditional methods for controlling the Aedes aegypti mosquito, primarily fumigation with toxic insecticides, have been largely ineffective. It is SSI’s mission to develop sustainable methods of prevention that do not rely on these chemicals.
